During the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, our media outlet had the pleasure of meeting Dorinex Mboumba, a young Gabonese author and model, at the Pavillon Afriques, a platform dedicated to showcasing talents and projects from across the African continent. She took part in the session “From Book to Screen”, which allowed authors and publishers to pitch their works to producers for potential screen adaptations.
The session began with an insightful legal presentation titled “Protecting Your Work: Legal Keys Before Signing with a Producer”, led by Casey Joly, an intellectual property lawyer. The goal was to equip creators with the necessary tools to safeguard their rights and negotiate the best possible contracts before adapting their work into film.
It was within this setting that Dorinex Mboumba presented her autobiographical project: “Shanghai and Me”. Blending a coming-of-age narrative with a heartfelt tribute to life, the book tells the story of a young African woman who leaves her family behind to pursue a modeling career in China. Through this unique journey, Dorinex offers a deeply personal perspective on fashion—not just as a matter of appearance, but as a process of self-construction and identity.

“Shanghai and Me” is much more than a professional account. It is an intimate journey between two continents—Gabon and China, between Mibanga, her native land, and the dazzling lights of Shanghai. The book reveals a young woman passionate about reading and writing, determined to leave a written trace of her experiences—an emotional path shared by her family, who lived her story with her from afar.
In this heartfelt story, Dorinex expresses her deep love for her homeland, her family values, friendships, romantic encounters, and the influential “Club of 12”, a recurring theme in her narrative. She also explores the discovery of others, openness to the world, the connection between Africa and Asia, and the universal quest for identity.
By pitching her project during this Cannes session, Dorinex Mboumba positions herself among a new generation of African writers determined to bring their voices to the screen—with boldness, authenticity, and emotion. A memorable encounter with an artist to watch.
