The documentary “Vaklush,” directed by Nikolay Vassilev, has been honored with the Golden Firefly at the Cannes World Film Festival – Remember the Future in the Social Justice category. Filmed over two decades, from 1998 to 2022, this documentary provides an in-depth look into the life of spiritual leader Vaklush Tolev, featuring never-before-seen archival footage. The film’s original score is composed by the esteemed Bulgarian kaval player, Theodosii Spassov.
Nikolay Vassilev highlighted the festival’s mission, stating to BTA that “Remember the Future” seeks to discover and bring global visibility to a new generation of talented filmmakers.
“Vaklush” has been selected for 24 documentary film festivals, earning a total of 10 awards. These include four awards in India, along with recognitions in the United States, Switzerland, and France. Notably, the Switzerland Film Fest & Screenplay Competition awarded it Best Screenplay, underscoring the film’s exceptional narrative quality.
The documentary’s exploration of social justice themes, as seen through Vaklush Tolev’s life and teachings, has struck a chord with audiences and critics alike, affirming its place as a significant work in documentary filmmaking.
