“We Are Safe”: Why Dubai-Based Influencers Suddenly Changed Their Tone on the UAE

Within just a few hours, several French influencers living in Dubai shifted from alarmed messages to reassuring statements about the situation in the United Arab Emirates. The sudden change has raised questions as regional tensions escalated following U.S. and Israeli strikes in Iran.

From Panic to Reassurance

The initial reaction on social media was marked by visible anxiety. Many French content creators who had relocated to Dubai for tax, lifestyle, or security reasons shared their fears after reports of drone threats and explosion sounds in the region.

Among them was Maëva Ghennam, known for appearing on the reality show Les Marseillais on W9. She initially called on France for urgent assistance, expressing fear and asking for protection. However, only hours later, her tone changed dramatically. She stated she felt “even prouder and happier” to live in Dubai, praising the country’s air defense system and emphasizing that there had been no casualties in the city.

Other reality TV figures such as Jessica Thivenin and Manon Tanti also posted reassuring messages. Speaking on the show Tout beau tout n9uf, Manon Tanti highlighted what she described as one of the best air defense systems in the world.

Meanwhile, personalities like Nabilla Vergara and Caroline Receveur remained notably quiet, limiting their posts to neutral content.

Pressure, Caution, or Self-Censorship?

The synchronized shift in tone sparked speculation online. Some social media users suggested that local authorities may have exerted pressure to limit alarmist messaging.

The UAE has strict laws against spreading “false information” that could harm public order or the country’s reputation. In that context, exaggerating or dramatizing events could potentially lead to financial penalties.

Laurent Correia denied that the government had sent letters to influencers, but confirmed that spreading false information could result in fines. His wife, Jazz Correia, went further, warning that she would report individuals who publicly criticized the Emirati government.

At this stage, there is no concrete evidence of direct governmental pressure. However, given the country’s legal framework and the economic dependence many influencers have on their image and partnerships in Dubai, self-censorship remains a plausible explanation.

A Major Reputation Issue for Dubai

Dubai has built its global image as a safe, luxury destination for tourism and expatriates. A wave of viral panic from high-profile residents could have serious consequences for its international reputation and tourism sector.

Local authorities reportedly covered additional hotel costs for stranded tourists, a move seen by some as supportive and by others as a strategic effort to preserve confidence in the destination.

At the same time, French authorities advised their citizens in the UAE to remain indoors, avoid windows and open areas, and follow official instructions. Some flights were rerouted via Abu Dhabi and Muscat, and at least one plane carrying French nationals landed safely in Paris.

Influencers Caught Between Fear and Image Management

This episode highlights the delicate position of expatriate influencers: they are both witnesses to unfolding events and economic actors whose livelihoods depend on stability and public perception.

Balancing personal fear, responsibility toward their followers, and compliance with local regulations is no simple task. The rapid shift from distress to reassurance may reflect genuine relief — or strategic communication shaped by context.

In an era where a single Instagram story can influence global perception, the line between free expression and image management appears thinner than ever.
